Windows 7 installation problems

Hello everyone,
I have a 2006 iMac 24" (2.16 GHz, 4 gig RAM) that has had a Windows XP partition on it from the early days.  In an attempt to upgrade things a little, I removed the partition altogether, updated my OS to Lion, and tried to install a new Windows 7 partition (using a Windows 7 Ultimate CD that I purchased) but this is when things went wrong.
Bootcamp created the partition and I formatted it without any problem, and then the Windows installation started and I left the machine for a while.  When I came back, I noticed that the machine was stuck in an endless reboot cycle:  it would reboot in Windows and go to that black screen mentioning that Windows was not shut down properly and gave me the choice to start either in Safe or Normal mode (which I could not choose since my keyboard commands were not recognized.)  Since I couldn't provide any input, the timer would count down to zero and "Start Windows in Normal mode" would automatically select, and the cycle would repeat.
I forced the machine to shut down and removed the installation windows (by holding down the mouse button during start up) in the hopes that it would start in OS mode so that I could remove the partition and start over, but unfortunately I get the same cycle even without the installation CD in the machine.
Any suggestions as to how to address this issue?  As a minimum, can someone give me some guidance on how to get back to my OS?  Once there, I'll simply remove the partition in Bootcamp and at least get my Mac back before (and if) I make another attempt.
Thanks for the help!

Anyone with a similar situation?
I managed to remove the Windows partition using the OS CD and started installing Windows again, this time with my old Vista CDs.  That installation went quite well, and when I attempted to upgrade using the Windows 7 CD I got the exact same problem: the installation went OK for about 80% and even rebooted a few times, but eventually I got to the same black screen asking me whether I want to stard Windows in Normal or Safe mode, but it wouldn't recognize any keyboard commands to it would eventually time out, restart and repeat this cycle endlessly until I would force the computer to shutdown (upon reboot it would get in the same cycle again.)
Would appreciate any input...
