File usage and conversion

Hi all... I have a question that I'm hoping someone can help out with for someone who has only minimal computer type knowledge and here's the scenario:
I've just downloaded some wonderful songs from iTunes and they play just fine on the computer, but... when I hook up my mp3 player the songs won't transfer and I believe it's because of the file format. I was told that iTunes was useful and compatable with mp3 players and not just iPods... is that incorrect info?? Also, I have tried a file format converter software - dbpoweramp - but that wouldn't convert the files to mp3 - perhaps because these downloaded files are protected AAC audio files (whatever that means)and they're somehow locked??? At any rate, is there anyway to convert or unlock these so I can use them in my player, I'd really like to continue using iTunes for music but won't be able to in the future if these files are not convertable (as it were). Any help on this will be greatly appreciated. Thanks All -
P.S. I might as well use this opportunity to ask some of you electronic media savy types if there also is a way to transfer some of my cassette tape music to mp3 files as well for transfer to the mp3 player. Tks.

You got the wrong forum dude. You want to post on the iTunes forum.
That being said, I think I can help. If you're not using an iPod then the problem is probably the copy protection on your songs. Burn them to a disk and then re-import them as mp3's, and they will be normal files. I don't know if iTunes is compatible with other players, but even if it is those other players aren't going to take those protected files. (You can tell the protected ones from normal AAC file because the protected ones have the suffix .m4p and the regular ones have .m4a)
To transfer cassettes to mp3's you have to use a recording program, and run a line from your player into your soundcard and record the songs on to your hard drive. Then mix them down and convert to MP3.
