HOW TO JOIN

General Course Information

Are you interested in becoming a member of the Wisconsin Umpires Association?  No experience is necessary to join. Our association’s primary goal is to train new umpires as well as assist in the further development of experienced umpires.

New umpire candidates are required to complete our basic training course, which includes 14 sessions over a 13 week period to become an Associate Member. Membership dues for this basic training course are $75, which includes the first year membership dues, as well as training materials necessary to complete the course. Through further training and game experience you can become a full member after your second year.

A second level of training, is offered to experienced umpires or for those who have successfully completed the basic training course and wish to come back to complete their Regular membership requirements. This 6 session course will concentrate on the 2 man umpiring system as well as additional plate work and classroom studies dealing with complicated rules, conflicts on the field and handling situations. The fee for this course is $60, which includes your membership dues as well as the "2 & 3 man Mechanics Guidebook" by Referee Magazine.

If you are an experienced umpire and are interested in joining the WUA, you must pass a written exam and positioning drills, which are conducted by our training staff in order to pass through the basic training program. You may then enroll in the 6 week course to advance to Regular Member status. Application for that pass through must be submitted to the Board of Directors before the first training class. For further information please contact Dan DeRemer at 262-549-5764 or email me at hmsdande@wi.rr.com .

Whether you’re interested in training to become a baseball or a fast-pitch softball umpire, the basic training program is designed to work with both sports. Graduates of the 13-week course are prepared to umpire at any of the youth levels or even as high as Junior Varsity, depending on your ability and level of experience. Many of our members have progressed to the High School Varsity level by their third year, depending upon their individual skills.
