How to Join

Are you interested in becoming a member of the Wisconsin Umpires Association? No experience is necessary to join. Our association’s primary goal is to train new umpires as well as assist in the further development of experienced umpires.

New members are required to complete 13 training sessions, which spans over a twelve week period, to become an Associate Member. Membership dues for the Level 1A training course is $75 and includes the first year membership dues, as well as training materials to complete the course. Through further training and game experience you can become a full member after your second year.

In 2010 we are proud to announce a second level of training (L1B) for those who have successfully completed the first level and wish to come back to complete their Associate membership requirements. This 6 session course will concentrate on the 2 man umpiring system as well as additional plate work and classroom studies dealing with complicated rules, conflicts on the field and handling situations. The fee for this course will be $60, which includes your membership dues as well as the 2 & 3 man Mechanics Guidebook by Referee Magazine.

Whether you’re interested in training to become a baseball or a fast-pitch softball umpire, the basic training program is designed to work with both sports. Graduates of the 13-week course are prepared to umpire at any of the youth levels or even as high as Junior Varsity, depending on your ability and level of experience. Many of our members have progressed to the High School Varsity level by their third year, depending upon their individual skills.

If you are an experienced umpire and are interested in joining, you must pass a written exam and positioning drills, which are conducted by our training staff to pass through the training class. Application for that pass through must be submitted to the Board of Directors before the first training class.

To register, complete the online  new member application. Classes will fill up quick so do not wait until the last minute.

Note: Fees should be made out to The WUA and sent to the WUA Treasurer at W161 N10998 Meadow Dr. Germantown. WI 53022

Training Classes for 2010

The 2010 training classes begin on Wednesday, January 27, and will be conducted at Heritage Christian High School’s main gym, located at 1300 S. 109th St. West Allis, WI. Registration will be from 6:00-6:30 PM, followed by a 2 ½ hour training session. Further classes will be conducted every Wednesday from 6:30-9:00 PM concluding on April 14th. Two additional training sessions will be conducted on a Saturday in March 20th and 27th at New Berlin West High School.

Each training class will consist of classroom sessions to discuss rules, drills in the gym and mechanics for positioning on the field. Attendance is required and homework will be assigned at each session. Please wear tennis shoes with non-skid soles as well as loose comfortable clothing to workout in.

Members of the training staff are veteran umpires who work high school Varsity, college and semi-pro levels and many have been to professional umpires training schools. Even if you are an experienced umpire and want to attend the training school to improve your skills or just as refresher course, you are welcome.

We are encouraging interested parties to enroll early by pre-registering so that we may send you the study materials and course outline in advance. There will be limited space and new trainees will not be allowed to enter the class after the second week of training.

For more information on the training classes contact Dan DeRemer by email at info@wisumpire.com or call 262-549-5764 .
